Jeff Bezos isn’t as prolific on Twitter like many other bigwigs on Twitter. But he fired three quickfire tweets as soon as Elon Musk’s Twitter takeover was made official. The first tweet that the Amazon founder posted was an indirect dig at Musk. Bezos quoted a tweet by a New York Times report where the journalist speculated if Tesla’s prominent business interests in China could give the government “leverage” over Twitter. Bezos tweeted in the reply, “Interesting question. Did the Chinese government just gain a bit of leverage over the town square?.” Musk had famously called Twitter the town square of the digital world.

However, Bezos then followed it up with his own answer to the question and then ended up praising Musk. “My own answer to this question is probably not. The more likely outcome in this regard is complexity in China for Tesla, rather than censorship at Twitter.” That actually could turn out to be a very likely outcome but it’s still very, very early days to see — something that Bezos also pointed out — how Musk’s takeover actually pans out. Bezos had a word of praise for Musk as well. “But we’ll see. Musk is extremely good at navigating this kind of complexity.”Till the filing of this report, the otherwise prolific — and now the owner of Twitter — Musk hadn’t replied to Bezos’ comments. It would be interesting to see if Musk actually replies to it, considering he has been championing the cause of free speech. After his takeover was made official, the Tesla CEO said “Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated.” FacebookTwitterLinkedin
